What are venous ultrasounds?

Venous ultrasounds are imaging tests of your veins, the blood vessels that return blood back to the heart and lungs for reoxygenation. Tiny valves in the veins open and close to push blood forward and prevent it from flowing back.

Damage to the valves or walls of your veins may affect this function, allowing blood to flow backward and pool, causing the vein to expand. Enlarged superficial veins cause varicose veins. Damaged veins affect circulation.

Veins are also prone to blood clots, which can lead to life-threatening complications like a pulmonary embolism (PE).

Venous ultrasounds evaluate the veins and the flow of blood through them to find circulation problems.

I have varicose veins. Should I get a venous ultrasound?

Many people consider their varicose veins more of a cosmetic problem than a health concern. However, varicose veins are a common symptom of venous insufficiency, a circulation problem that affects the veins in the legs.

If you have varicose veins that cause pain or make your legs feel weak or crampy, you may have a more serious circulation problem. A venous ultrasound can confirm or rule out venous insufficiency.

How do I prepare for venous ultrasounds?

The team at My Choice Imaging provides specific instructions on how to prepare for your venous ultrasound. In some cases, the team may ask that you stop eating and drinking several hours before your ultrasound. However, most venous ultrasounds don’t require special preparation.

The team asks that you come to the test wearing comfortable clothing and leave all valuables at home.

What happens during venous ultrasounds?

After you change into an exam gown, your ultrasound technician has you lie down on the cushioned ultrasound table. They apply a special gel to the skin on your leg and place the handheld transducer on the gel and move it back and forth over the area.

The transducer uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of your veins and the movement of blood through the blood vessels. You shouldn’t feel any pain during your venous ultrasound.

The radiologists at My Choice Imaging review the images from your ultrasound, write a report, and send it to your referring physician. Your physician discusses the results of your venous ultrasound with you, what it means, and your treatment options.
