What is a breast screening?

A breast screening looks for breast cancer before you have symptoms. In the United States, 1 in 8 women gets breast cancer at some point in their life.

Breast screenings find cancer during the early stages when it’s more responsive to treatment, increasing chances of a full recovery.

Breast cancer doesn’t run in my family. Why do I need breast screenings?

Anyone can get breast cancer, even if it doesn’t run in your family. Though it’s more common in women, men get breast cancer, too.

You need breast screening because it can save your life. Finding and treating breast cancer during the early stages increases your chances of survival.

Breast cancer is an overgrowth of abnormal breast cells. The type of breast cell involved determines the type of cancer you have. Some forms of breast cancer are more aggressive than others.

What does a breast screening feel like?

The patient-centered team at My Choice Imaging, LLC does everything possible to make sure you feel comfortable during your breast screening. You may feel some pressure, but you shouldn’t have any pain.

The team at My Choice Imaging, LLC performs mammograms for breast screening. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast tissue. In order to get thorough images of your breast tissue, the technician at My Choice Imaging, LLC flattens your breast between two plates.

They take images of one breast at a time and may take several pictures at different angles to get an accurate representation of your breast tissue.

Breast screening at My Choice Imaging, LLC takes about 15-30 minutes.

When should I have breast screenings?

Your primary care doctor can talk to you about breast screening and when you need it.

In general, women have the option to start mammogram breast screenings at age 40, but need to begin at 45. You need annual breast screenings until 54, and then you can have screenings every other year after that.

If you have a personal or family history of breast cancer, you may need to start screenings before 40.

Don’t put off your breast screening. Call My Choice Imaging, LLC today or schedule your mammogram online.
